Huskies Extend Winning Streak with Another Shutout Against Mavericks

TRIMONT — The Jackson County Central (JCC) volleyball team continued its impressive streak of shutout victories, making it four in a row with a convincing performance on Monday night against the Martin County West (MCW) Mavericks in Trimont.

Led by the dynamic trio of Emma Haren, Kylee Wenzel, and Sawyer Flatgard, who combined for 27 kills, and with assists from the skilled setting pair of Elese Paplow and Bailey Finck, the Huskies secured a 25-19, 25-19, 25-14 nonconference sweep.

JCC head coach Deidre Wierson explained, "We had a bit of a rough patch due to injuries and illnesses, which led to a rare nine-match losing streak from September 16-23. Despite dropping five of those games during the Warehouse Showcase in Burnsville on September 22-23 against tough competition, we needed to regain our confidence and comfort."

Mission accomplished. The Huskies turned the tide with 3-0 victories over Pipestone Area on September 28, St. James Area on October 2, and Luverne on October 5, and they added MCW to their list of triumphs on Monday night.

In Game 1, Flatgard's four-point service run gave the Huskies an early 5-2 lead, but the Mavericks, led by Emily Anderson, countered to tie the score at 6-all. Haren's serving skills helped the Huskies regain a comfortable lead at 10-6 with a four-point run. Haren finished with 10 points, connecting on 14 of 15 serves.

In Game 2, Paplow, a volleyball commit to the University of Northwestern in St. Paul, shifted the momentum with a seven-point service run. Despite a late surge from MCW, the Huskies, anchored by Wenzel's powerful kills, secured the win.

Game 3 saw Paplow, Haren, and Hash contributing from the service area, building a commanding 17-5 lead. Flatgard's game-clinching kill off a Finck set assist sealed the three-game sweep for JCC.

Haren led all hitters with 10 kills, while Wenzel and Flatgard added nine and eight spike-winners, respectively. Paplow's serving performance was flawless, connecting on all 18 attempts for a match-high 12 points.
