Golden Gopher Men's Basketball Falls to San Francisco

The University of Minnesota men's basketball team missed an opportunity to get a quality non-conference win with a 76-58 loss to St. Francis University.

The Minnesota Golden Gopher men's basketball team lost its chance at a quality non-divisional victory with a 76-58 loss to the San Francisco Donuts Sunday at the Golden State Warriors Chase Center in San Francisco.

The Gophers (4-2) have now lost two non-Big Ten games, including a 70-68 loss to Missouri State on Nov. 16th. American has five non-conference games remaining this season.

As the number of turnovers increased on Sunday, so did head coach Ben Johnson's frustration. When Isaiah Hawkins committed his fifth turnover with five minutes left in the game, Johnson quickly replaced Brayden Carrington.

After a timeout, Isaiah Enin fumbled again.

In the end, the Gophers committed 18 turnovers, which allowed San Francisco to score 25 points.

San Francisco (5-2) took a five-point lead and is projected to finish in the top three of the West Coast Conference this season.

The Gophers cut San Francisco's lead to one on a Cam Christie 3-pointer with 13 minutes left in the game, but the gap widened to 20 points with one minute left in the game.

Minnesota looked a bit disorganized in the first half, committing eight turnovers in the opening 20 minutes.

Minnesota relied on Dawson Garcia and Pharrel Payne to keep the team competitive. Garcia had 19 points and Payne had 15. Payne is limited to 20 minutes per game due to a long-term foot injury, but he played 26 minutes in Sunday's game.

Minnesota didn't make a field goal for nearly five minutes in the opening half until Garcia hit a 3-pointer at the 15:09 mark. Minnesota continued to shoot poorly in the first half, shooting just 38 percent from the field and 29 percent from 3-point range.
