Longwood Musketeers Defeat Delaware Hornets in Double Overtime

The Longwood Spears trailed by six points in the final 13 seconds of overtime against the Delaware State Hornets, but scored consecutive points in the extra period en route to an 84-82 overtime win.

Farmville, VA - The Longwood men's basketball team rallied from a six-point deficit in the final 13 seconds of overtime to defeat the Delaware Hornets 84-82 in double overtime on Friday afternoon.

The Musketeers (4-1) were led by Michael St. Croix, who scored 17 points and went 11-for-11 from the free throw line. Justin Johnson-Mercer finished with 10 points, including six free throws in overtime and a team-high nine rebounds. Valin Napper scored 14 points, all coming after halftime, and Da Houston tied a career-high 16 points.

Delaware State (1-5) was led by Martaz Robinson, who scored a game-high 24 points. Jevin Muniz scored 22 points and Deywilk Tavarez had a career-high 19 points.

Delaware State took a seven-point advantage early in overtime after the Yellow Jackets sent the game into overtime on Robinson's 15-footer with 1.8 seconds left.

However, the Riflemen overcame the deficit to win the game in double overtime. St. Croix extended its lead to 68-64 on a pair of St. Croix free throws with 1:12 left in overtime, while a throw-in by Napper with 30 seconds left in overtime cut the lead to two.

Robinson then calmly hit four free throws to extend the lead for Delaware State to six with 19 seconds left in the game.

Houston scored on a layup and hit a throw-in with 13 seconds left to extend the lead to four before Lancer's defense worked wonders. With 10 seconds left in the game, Jasper Granlund broke the tie and Massey hit two free throws to extend the lead to 72-70.

Massey then stole an inbounds pass for the Blue Hens and pounced on the puck from a Delaware State player, and Valin Napper reversed the cut and scored on a layup to tie the game at 72 and send his team into double overtime.

Robinson again scored the first goal for Delaware State in the second overtime, but four consecutive points from St. Croix gave Longwood its first lead of the game in overtime, 76-74. St. Croix contributed six of its 17 points in the second overtime, including going 4-for-4 from the free throw line.

Mercer also played well, going 4-for-4 from the free throw line and contributing a big bucket and an offensive rebound with 13 seconds left to effectively end the game.
